Get to Know Muyalé

Muyalé Food & Drinks sits inside a restored antigüeña family home on 6ta Avenida Sur, a short walk from Parque Central. Behind the name, the house, and the menu is a concept built around one idea: food made the way a family kitchen would make it, served in a setting that still feels like a home rather than a restaurant.

Where does the name Muyalé come from?

The name is inspired by the landscape of El Hato, a cloud forest area near Antigua where fog rolls in most afternoons. “Muyal” means cloud in the Mayan language — a nod to that mist, and to the idea of a place that feels a little removed from the noise of the city, even though it sits just a few minutes from Parque Central.

What kind of building is Muyalé set in?

Muyalé occupies what was originally a family home in Antigua Guatemala, later converted into a restaurant. That history is still visible in the layout: an open garden at the center, a large room in the back with a mural by artist Luis Izquierdo, and a smaller room with a direct view of the volcano. Between the garden and the indoor rooms, the space holds up to 75 people, making it as suited to a quiet breakfast for two as it is to a private event.

Who’s behind the kitchen?

The kitchen is led by a chef with 35 years of experience, including time working in the Hamptons, New York. That background shows up less in fine-dining flourishes and more in the basics done properly: bread and cheese made in-house rather than bought in, which is still uncommon among restaurants in Antigua. The kitchen bakes its own coconut bread, burger buns, and baguettes, and makes its own mozzarella, cheddar, and monterrey jack cheese.

What does Muyalé serve, exactly?

Muyalé runs on three menus through the day — breakfast from 7am to 11am, lunch from 11:30am to 4pm, and dinner from 5pm onward — built around plates like the signature Desayuno Muyalé, the Sandwich Antigueño, and Focaccia alla Romana, alongside coffee sourced from the Antigua and Acatenango growing regions and a drink menu that runs from mojitos and negronis to an Espresso Martini. The kitchen can also accommodate vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free requests on request.

Is Muyalé more for tourists or for locals?

Both, though most of Muyalé’s current guests — around 70% — are visitors from outside Guatemala, with the rest made up of local guests from Antigua and the surrounding area. The garden setting and the pace of the place tend to appeal to both: travelers looking for somewhere to sit down between sightseeing, and locals looking for a proper breakfast or a place to host an event.

Can you host an event at Muyalé?

Yes. The property can be booked as a whole, or just the large back room, for private events of different kinds — birthdays, workshops, presentations, and similar gatherings, with room for up to 75 people between the indoor space and the garden.

Wine pairing with each course of a tasting menu is common, with careful attention to how each wine complements the dish. The staff are meticulously trained in every detail.
